Internships, Field Work and Course Work

Our Sociology curriculum provides students with various types of hands-on, applied, and experiential learning opportunities.

Sociology Courses

We offer several seminars that are geared to providing students with opportunities to develop and apply their knowledge and skills. In our introductory seminar students already are asked to think about the types of skills they will develop in their sociology courses, and how these skills are linked to various careers. In our research methods course and senior seminar students learn to apply methods by engaging in actual research projects.

Internships

Internships in Sociology furnish students with significant learning experiences that are designed to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired from their sociology curriculum, as well as to develop these further. Internship placements are based on students’ interests and career goals.

Sociology internships provide a supervised work experience in an approved organization to gain knowledge of applications of sociology in work settings and to analyze work settings using sociological knowledge and research methods. Student interns work under the dual supervision of a Sociology faculty advisor as well as an on-site agency supervisor.

Our sociology faculty have a broad network of contacts for internship placements. Our students have completed internships related to criminal justice (for example, prosecutors’ offices, and courts), law (law offices and bar associations), business (for example, insurance agencies), counseling, polling, social policy and lobbying, urban planning, to name just a few.

Qualifications/Pre-requisites for Internships
Student must have completed a minimum of 60 credits and must have at least 2.75 GPA in order to undertake an internship. All internships must be approved by a Sociology faculty member as well as Sociology Department chairperson.

  • Requirements: A student intern is required to work in the assigned internship site a minimum of 48 hours for each credit earned. For three (3) credits a student must work a minimum of 144 hours. During the Fall and Spring semesters, internships shall normally be 13 weeks in duration. During the Summer sessions, internships shall normally be 5 weeks in duration. Individual agencies may have additional internship work hour requirements beyond the minimum.
