Summer 2026 Flextime Dress-Down Policy

Summer Flextime - Flextime is a work concept that divides the day into segments of core time, when all employees are expected to be at work and flexible time, usually at the beginning and end of the day. A weekly schedule of 35 hours must be maintained (37.5 hours for Facilities and Public Safety employees). This schedule will include, on Fridays, the hours of closing.

The core time is 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All employees must be at work during this period. Flexible hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Flextime is completely voluntary; employees may choose to remain with a standard summer schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch. In addition, certain departments will have schedules that vary from hours described below or have particular needs that may, in some instances, be addressed outside this policy.

Time Period:

Operational hours for the summer will be as follows:

  • May 18 - August 7, 2026: Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Fridays closed

Key Aspects:

Department heads should meet with staff before the effective dates of this policy to discuss the policy including:

  • Time sheets, where applicable, should accurately reflect hours worked.
  • A lunchtime of at least 30 minutes must be taken each day.
  • Schedules must be coordinated within working units so that department coverage continues to be provided for the entire business period of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Flextime work schedules require supervisory approval.
  • Part-time employees are not affected by this policy.
  • Closing must be indicated on timesheets.

Dress-Down:

Members of the campus community will be able to dress down everyday during the flextime period. While casual attire is appropriate, informal leisure clothing such as T-shirts, tank or halter tops and shorts will not be permitted. Questions on appropriateness will be decided by supervisors and Human Resources. Please remember that off-campus business commitments or more formal on-campus meetings will require regular business attire.

Summer Flextime & Dress-Down Policy Q&A

All University offices will be open and staffed Monday through Thursday for full days (8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.). University offices will be closed on Fridays staring the week of May 18, 2026. Some departments, because of operational needs, may not be able to take advantage of being closed on Fridays. In these cases, alternative flextime, with supervisory approval, can be arranged.

Please be sure to change your personal and office voice-mail and email messages to notify the public of Friday closings.

Several departments in the University have activities or service requirements on Fridays in the summer and therefore, will need to continue to have their offices fully operational and staffed during these times. However, with your supervisor's approval, and as long as operational needs are met, you can take off another day determined by your supervisor.

No, operational hours for the summer will be as follows:

  • May 18 - August 7: Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Fridays closed

Your supervisor may determine that your office must remain open but that reduced staffing would be sufficient. In that case, the supervisor can allow employees to alternate, with comparable time off arranged with the supervisor.

No, this is an arrangement between the supervisor and employee and will be tracked within the department.

The 7.5 hours on Friday is indicated as closing.
